Habitat
Yellow-throated martens primarily inhabit forested areas in Asia, including temperate and subtropical forests from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia. They prefer regions with dense undergrowth and proximity to water sources, such as streams or rivers, and can adapt to both mountainous and lowland terrains up to 4,000 meters elevation.
Diet
This species is omnivorous, feeding on small mammals like rodents and squirrels, birds, and reptiles, as well as fruits, insects, and carrion. They hunt actively during dawn and dusk, using their agility to chase prey through trees and on the ground, and will scavenge when opportunities arise.
Behavior
These martens are primarily solitary animals, marking territories with scent and defending them aggressively from intruders. They are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular, spending their days in dens or tree hollows, and exhibit agile climbing and swimming behaviors to evade threats or hunt. They communicate through vocalizations and scent marking, and are known for their curiosity and boldness around human settlements.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the yellow-throated marten as Least Concern, though populations are declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include hunting for fur and the pet trade, particularly in parts of Southeast Asia.
