Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical and subtropical forests in Borneo, including lowland rainforests and montane areas up to 2,000 meters. They prefer dense vegetation for cover and are often found near rivers or streams. Geographic range is limited to the island of Borneo in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Diet

The Bornean marten is omnivorous, feeding on a variety of items including fruits, berries, small mammals like rodents, birds, and insects. They hunt actively at dawn and dusk, using their agility to chase prey in trees or on the ground. Feeding behavior includes caching food for later use.

Behavior

Bornean martens are primarily solitary animals, except during mating season, and are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular to avoid competition. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking their ranges with scent and defending them aggressively. Notable behaviors include agile climbing in trees and vocal communications like whistles and growls.

Conservation Status

The Bornean marten is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but habitat loss due to deforestation poses a threat to its population. Population trends are stable overall, though fragmentation of forests may affect local subpopulations.
