Habitat
Formosan martens primarily inhabit mountainous forests in Taiwan, favoring broadleaf and coniferous woodlands at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. They are adaptable to various forest types but prefer areas with dense undergrowth for cover and hunting. These regions often include steep terrain and rocky outcrops.
Diet
Formosan martens are omnivorous, feeding on small mammals like rodents, birds, and insects, as well as fruits and nuts. They hunt opportunistically during dawn and dusk, using their agility to chase prey or forage on the ground and in trees. Feeding behavior includes caching food for later use.
Behavior
Formosan martens are solitary animals that are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, actively foraging at night to avoid competition and predators. They are territorial, marking their ranges with scent and defending them aggressively, though home ranges can overlap slightly. These martens are excellent climbers, often using trees for escape and resting, and they communicate through vocalizations and scent marking.
Conservation Status
The Formosan marten is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include road development and human encroachment, with populations showing a declining trend.
