Habitat
This species inhabits major river systems in South Asia, including the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Indus rivers, preferring deep, turbid waters with strong currents. They are found in freshwater environments from the Himalayan foothills to the river deltas, avoiding very shallow or clear waters.
Diet
South Asian river dolphins primarily eat fish such as catfishes, barbs, and shad, which they catch using echolocation in murky waters. They feed mainly at dawn and dusk, hunting individually or in small groups by herding fish into shallower areas.
Behavior
These dolphins are typically solitary or found in small groups of up to six individuals, with loose social structures. They are most active at dawn and dusk, using high-frequency echolocation clicks for navigation and hunting in turbid rivers. They exhibit territorial behavior around feeding areas and are known to breach the surface frequently to breathe.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists the South Asian river dolphin as Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat fragmentation from dams, pollution, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear. Major threats include river degradation and overfishing, necessitating urgent conservation efforts.
