Habitat
This species inhabits the Indus River in Pakistan, preferring deep, fast-flowing channels with turbid water. It is found in both freshwater and sometimes brackish areas, avoiding shallow or slow-moving sections.
Diet
The Indus river dolphin primarily feeds on fish such as catfish and carp, as well as shrimp and other invertebrates. It uses echolocation to hunt in murky waters, typically feeding during dawn and dusk when prey is more active.
Behavior
Indus river dolphins are usually solitary or found in small groups of up to six individuals, often swimming near the water's surface. They are diurnal, relying heavily on echolocation for navigation and hunting in turbid rivers, and exhibit territorial behavior by defending feeding areas. These dolphins frequently breach the surface to breathe, making them easier to spot from boats.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Endangered, with the population declining due to threats like habitat fragmentation from dams, pollution, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear.
