Overview
The southern mountain reedbuck is larger and somewhat redder in color than other mountain reedbuck, but is otherwise similar.

Habitat
Mountainous regions. Distribution- Discontinuously in its specialized habitat in the eastern part of South Africa: the Transvaal except for the northeast and west; Natal; southern and eastern Orange Free State; and eastern Cape Province. There also are limited distributions in the Lobatsi area of southeastern Botswana and in the Lobombo Mountains of southwestern Mozambique. In South Africa it is found as high as 8,000 feet (2,400 m) in the Drakensberg Mountains, on rocky hills in Zululand not far above sea level, and at all intermediate elevations.
Diet
Primarily grazes, and must drink regularly.
Behavior
These animals tend to remain in small herds, with less than 10 individuals comprising a herd. There is usually a dominant male accompanying several females and young, with juvenile males not included.
Hunting
The broken terrain these animals inhabit adds difficulty to the hunt, as does their tendency to remain close to cover.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
