Habitat

Kodkods primarily inhabit dense temperate rainforests in southern Chile and adjacent parts of Argentina, favoring areas with thick undergrowth and proximity to streams or wetlands. They are adaptable to secondary forests and shrublands but avoid open areas. This terrain provides cover for hunting and shelter from predators.

Diet

Kodkods mainly eat small rodents like mice and rats, as well as birds, frogs, and lizards. They are opportunistic hunters that stalk and pounce on prey, often feeding at night. Fruits and insects may supplement their diet during certain seasons.

Behavior

Kodkods are solitary animals that maintain exclusive territories, marking them with scent from glands on their paws and face. They are primarily nocturnal, spending days resting in dense vegetation and nights hunting or patrolling. These cats are elusive and avoid human contact, communicating through vocalizations and scent marking.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists the Kodkod as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation, with populations declining from persecution and road accidents. Major threats include human encroachment and climate change impacts on their rainforest habitats.
