Habitat

Primarily found in the temperate rainforests and dense undergrowth of southern Chile and adjacent parts of Argentina. They prefer areas with thick vegetation near water sources, such as streams and forests, and avoid open or heavily disturbed terrains.

Diet

The Central kodkod mainly eats small rodents, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, which it hunts by stalking and pouncing. It is primarily nocturnal, foraging alone in the underbrush, and supplements its diet with insects or fruits when prey is scarce.

Behavior

Central kodkods are solitary and territorial animals that mark their ranges with scent and vocalizations. They are primarily nocturnal, spending the day resting in dense vegetation or trees, and are agile climbers that avoid human contact. They communicate through calls and are generally elusive in the wild.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Central kodkod as Vulnerable, with a decreasing population trend due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include human encroachment, road accidents, and predation by domestic animals.
