Habitat
Eastern gorillas primarily inhabit the mountainous forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda, at elevations between 2,200 and 4,000 meters. They prefer dense vegetation such as bamboo groves, subalpine forests, and areas with abundant herbaceous plants, where they can find cover and food sources.
Diet
Eastern gorillas mainly consume leaves, stems, shoots, and fruits of various plants, with a strong preference for bamboo and wild celery. They are primarily folivores and spend much of their day foraging in groups, feeding most actively in the morning and late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day.
Behavior
Eastern gorillas live in cohesive family groups led by a dominant silverback male, who protects the group and makes key decisions. They are diurnal, spending their days foraging, resting, and traveling through their territory, while exhibiting territorial behaviors like chest-beating and vocal displays to defend against intruders. These gorillas are generally peaceful but can be aggressive when threatened.
Conservation Status
The Eastern gorilla is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, with populations rapidly declining due to habitat destruction from agriculture and mining, as well as poaching and disease.
