Habitat
Eastern lowland gorillas primarily inhabit dense tropical rainforests and swamps in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They prefer areas with abundant vegetation and water sources, often at elevations between 600 and 2,800 meters. These habitats provide cover and food resources essential for their survival.
Diet
Their diet mainly consists of leaves, stems, fruits, and bark from a variety of plants, making them primarily folivorous and frugivorous. They spend several hours each day foraging on the ground and in trees, typically during daylight hours. Feeding behavior includes using their strong hands to strip vegetation and occasionally consuming insects or small invertebrates.
Behavior
Eastern lowland gorillas live in social groups led by a dominant silverback male, which can include several females and their offspring. They are diurnal, spending their days foraging, resting, and engaging in social interactions like grooming. These groups are territorial, with the silverback defending the troop from threats and exhibiting behaviors such as chest-beating displays.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Eastern lowland gorilla as Critically Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and mining, as well as poaching for the bushmeat trade.
