Habitat
This species inhabits rocky mountain slopes and arid regions, primarily in Iran and possibly adjacent areas in Central Asia. It prefers crevices in rocks and areas with sparse vegetation for shelter and foraging. Geographic preferences include elevations from 1,000 to 3,000 meters.
Diet
Zarudny's rock shrew primarily eats insects such as beetles and ants, along with spiders and earthworms. It exhibits nocturnal feeding behavior, actively hunting in leaf litter or under rocks to capture prey. Feeding times are mainly at night, allowing it to avoid predators.
Behavior
Zarudny's rock shrew is solitary and territorial, marking its area with scent and aggressively defending it from intruders. It is primarily nocturnal, spending days in rock crevices and actively foraging at night. Notable behaviors include rapid movements and a high metabolic rate that requires constant feeding.
Conservation Status
Zarudny's rock shrew is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with no significant population decline noted, though data is limited. Major threats include habitat loss from human development and potential predation pressure.
