Habitat
This species primarily inhabits coastal forests, woodlands, and riverine areas in East Africa, preferring regions with dense vegetation for cover and food sources. It is found in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique, often at elevations up to 1,500 meters.
Diet
The Zanj sun squirrel feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, nuts, and insects, with a preference for items like figs and acorns when available. It exhibits diurnal feeding behavior, foraging actively in trees during the day and storing food for later use. Occasionally, it may consume bird eggs or small vertebrates.
Behavior
Zanj sun squirrels are diurnal and primarily arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they are agile climbers and leapers. They are generally solitary or live in pairs, exhibiting territorial behavior by marking trees with scent glands and vocalizing to warn off intruders. They are curious animals that may investigate human activity but quickly retreat to safety.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss due to deforestation poses a potential threat.
