Habitat
The Yunnan hare inhabits montane grasslands, shrublands, and forests in southwestern China, particularly in Yunnan province. It prefers elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 meters, where it can find cover in dense vegetation and rocky areas. This species avoids heavily forested or urbanized regions.
Diet
The Yunnan hare primarily feeds on grasses, herbs, and leaves, with a preference for young, tender plants. It forages mainly at night to avoid predators, spending the day resting in shallow depressions. In lean seasons, it may also consume bark and roots.
Behavior
The Yunnan hare is primarily nocturnal, emerging at dusk to feed and explore, which helps it avoid daytime predators. It is solitary outside of breeding season and maintains small territories, marking them with scent. Notable behaviors include rapid zigzagging runs when fleeing and creating shallow scrapes in the ground for resting.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists the Yunnan hare as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from agriculture and urbanization, with populations declining. Major threats include hunting and fragmentation of its montane habitats.
