Habitat

Yellowfin surgeonfish primarily inhabit coral reefs and rocky substrates in tropical marine environments. They prefer shallow to moderately deep waters, typically from 5 to 40 meters, in the Indo-Pacific region. These areas often include lagoons, outer reefs, and regions with strong currents.

Diet

Yellowfin surgeonfish mainly consume benthic algae, seaweed, and occasionally small invertebrates. They feed by grazing on reef surfaces during the day, using their beak-like mouths to scrape food. Feeding activity is most intense in the early morning and late afternoon when algae growth is optimal.

Behavior

Yellowfin surgeonfish are often found in schools, providing safety in numbers, but they can become territorial around feeding sites. They are diurnal, actively swimming and foraging during the day while seeking shelter in crevices at night. These fish may aggressively defend their territory using their sharp caudal spines against intruders.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
