Habitat
Yellowfin pigfish inhabit coral reefs and rocky substrates in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They prefer depths between 5 to 50 meters, often found around Australia, New Zealand, and nearby islands where there is ample cover from structures like caves and ledges. These areas provide protection and abundant food sources.
Diet
Yellowfin pigfish primarily feed on small crustaceans, mollusks, and occasionally small fish, using their strong jaws to crush shells. They are active foragers during the day, often hunting in crevices or over reefs. Feeding behavior includes darting quickly to ambush prey, which helps them conserve energy between hunts.
Behavior
Yellowfin pigfish are typically solitary or found in small groups, exhibiting territorial behavior around their reef habitats to defend feeding areas. They are diurnal, active during the day and resting in crevices at night, often displaying quick, agile movements to evade threats. This species shows curiosity towards divers, sometimes approaching closely, but they can be skittish if disturbed.
Conservation Status
Listed as Data Deficient by IUCN.
