Habitat
Yellowfin goatfish inhabit coral reefs, sandy bottoms, and lagoons in warm tropical and subtropical waters. They prefer depths from 1 to 100 meters and are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, including areas like the Red Sea and Hawaiian islands. These fish often school over open substrates near reefs.
Diet
Yellowfin goatfish primarily feed on small benthic invertebrates such as crabs, worms, and shrimp, which they detect and unearth using their sensitive barbels. They exhibit diurnal feeding behavior, actively foraging in schools during the day over sandy or rubble substrates. This feeding strategy helps them avoid competition by stirring up the seafloor.
Behavior
Yellowfin goatfish are highly social, forming large schools that forage together over the seafloor, which provides safety in numbers from predators. They are diurnal, active during the day and resting at night in reef crevices, and exhibit color changes for camouflage or communication. These fish are not particularly territorial but may scatter and regroup when threatened.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
