Habitat

This fish inhabits rocky and gravelly bottoms in shallow coastal waters, often in intertidal zones and up to depths of about 100 meters. It prefers cold, temperate regions of the North Pacific, including areas around Alaska and Russia with strong currents and abundant cover from rocks and kelp.

Diet

The Yellow Irish lord primarily feeds on small invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, and worms, as well as occasional small fish. It is an ambush predator that hunts by lying in wait on the seafloor, typically active during dawn and dusk when prey is more abundant. Feeding behavior involves quick strikes to capture prey in its toothy mouth.

Behavior

This species is generally solitary and territorial, defending small areas around rocks or crevices. It is mostly nocturnal, remaining hidden during the day and foraging at night to avoid predators. Yellow Irish lords exhibit minimal social interactions and rely on camouflage and spiny defenses for protection.
