Yarlungensis pika

Ochotona yarlungensis

The Yarlungensis pika i…

Habitat

This species inhabits alpine meadows and rocky slopes in the high-altitude regions of the Tibetan Plateau, particularly around the Yarlung Valley in southern Tibet. It prefers areas with loose rocks for burrows and abundant vegetation, typically at elevations above 3,000 meters. These habitats provide shelter from predators and harsh weather.

Diet

The Yarlungensis pika primarily eats grasses, herbs, and sedges, which it forages during the day in its alpine habitat. It exhibits haying behavior, collecting and storing vegetation for winter consumption. Feeding occurs mainly in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Behavior

Yarlungensis pikas are diurnal and live in loose colonies with overlapping territories, communicating through high-pitched calls to warn of predators. They are highly territorial, defending their burrows and food caches aggressively. These pikas are active year-round but reduce activity in winter, relying on stored food.

Conservation Status

The Yarlungensis pika is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss from overgrazing and climate change. Population trends are declining, with major threats including fragmentation of alpine meadows and potential predation pressure.
