Habitat
The Yarkand hare inhabits arid deserts and semi-desert regions in Central Asia, particularly the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, China. It prefers sandy terrains with sparse vegetation like shrubs and grasses, avoiding mountainous areas.
Diet
The Yarkand hare primarily feeds on grasses, leaves, and shrubs, with a preference for succulent plants in its arid environment. It is mostly nocturnal, foraging during the cooler night hours to avoid daytime heat and predators. Feeding behavior includes quick, opportunistic grazing to minimize exposure.
Behavior
Yarkand hares are primarily solitary and nocturnal, spending the day in shallow burrows or under vegetation to escape the heat. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent and using high-speed runs up to 60 km/h to evade predators. They are generally quiet but may thump their hind feet as a warning signal.
Conservation Status
The Yarkand hare is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but its population may be declining due to habitat loss from desertification and human activities. Major threats include competition with livestock and potential overhunting in some areas.
