Habitat

The Yankari shrew is found primarily in the Yankari Game Reserve in northeastern Nigeria, inhabiting savannas, grasslands, and rocky outcrops. It prefers areas with dense vegetation and proximity to water sources for foraging. This species avoids dense forests, opting for open terrains with cover.

Diet

The Yankari shrew feeds mainly on insects such as beetles, ants, and termites, as well as spiders and other small invertebrates. It is an active hunter, foraging at night using its keen sense of smell and touch. Feeding occurs frequently due to its high metabolism, often multiple times per hour.

Behavior

The Yankari shrew is nocturnal and solitary, spending the day in burrows or under rocks and emerging at night to forage. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking areas with scent and avoiding direct confrontations. This species is highly active and agile, using quick movements to evade threats and communicate through high-pitched sounds.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Yankari shrew is Data Deficient due to limited research, but it faces threats from habitat loss due to agriculture and human settlement. Population trends are unknown, potentially declining in its restricted range.
