Habitat

Wied's marmosets primarily inhabit the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, favoring secondary forests, forest edges, and areas with dense undergrowth. They are adaptable to both lowland and montane regions up to 1,000 meters elevation, often found near water sources or human-altered landscapes.

Diet

Wied's marmosets feed mainly on tree sap, gum, and exudates obtained by gouging bark with their teeth, supplemented by fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. They are active foragers during the day, often in small groups, and spend significant time in the canopy searching for food. Feeding peaks in the early morning and late afternoon.

Behavior

Wied's marmosets live in family groups of 4-15 individuals, typically led by a dominant breeding pair, with cooperative care of offspring. They are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and exhibit territorial behavior by marking boundaries with scent glands. Notable behaviors include vocal communication with a variety of calls and playful interactions among group members.

Conservation Status

Wied's marmoset is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include agriculture expansion and urbanization, with populations declining overall.
