Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and montane forests on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, at elevations up to 2,000 meters. It prefers dense canopy cover for foraging and nesting, avoiding open areas due to predation risks.
Diet
Prosciurillus leucomus mainly feeds on nuts, seeds, and fruits from forest trees, supplemented by insects and occasionally small invertebrates. It forages actively during the day in the canopy, using its sharp teeth to crack open hard shells. Feeding behavior includes caching food for later use.
Behavior
These squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time climbing and leaping between trees in search of food. They are generally solitary but may tolerate others in areas with abundant resources, exhibiting territorial marking with scent glands. Notable behaviors include rapid escapes from threats and vocal alarm calls to warn of predators.
Conservation Status
According to the IUCN Red List, Prosciurillus leucomus is classified as Least Concern with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from deforestation poses a potential threat.
