Habitat

This species inhabits warm tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, primarily in open pelagic environments near the surface. It is commonly found associating with larger marine animals like sharks and rays, and prefers areas with strong currents and abundant host species.

Diet

The whitefin sharksucker feeds mainly on scraps of food from its host animals, such as parasites, dead skin, and leftover prey. It also consumes small fishes, plankton, and other small invertebrates, often detaching from hosts to opportunistically forage in the water column.

Behavior

This fish is known for attaching to larger marine animals using its suction disc, allowing it to hitch rides and access food sources, though it can swim independently. It exhibits solitary or small group behavior, is active during the day, and shows little territoriality, often detaching to feed or evade threats.

Conservation Status

Listed as Data Deficient by IUCN.
