Habitat
This species primarily inhabits dry deciduous forests and scrublands in western Madagascar. It prefers areas with dense vegetation and tree cover for shelter and foraging. They are adapted to arid environments with seasonal rainfall, avoiding more humid regions.
Diet
The White-footed sportive lemur mainly eats leaves, buds, and fruits from trees such as tamarind and acacias. It is primarily folivorous, spending nights foraging to consume high-fiber plant material for energy. Feeding occurs nocturnally to avoid predators and competition.
Behavior
These lemurs are solitary and nocturnal, spending days hidden in tree hollows or dense foliage to avoid detection. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands and vocal calls to defend resources. Males and females maintain separate territories but may interact briefly during mating season, with minimal social interactions otherwise.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the White-footed sportive lemur as Vulnerable due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including fragmentation of forests and human encroachment.
