Habitat

This species inhabits tropical rainforests, mangroves, and coastal areas in northern Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. They prefer regions with abundant fruit trees and roost in caves, rock crevices, or dense foliage during the day.

Diet

The Western naked-backed fruit bat primarily feeds on fruits such as figs, mangos, and other ripe tropical produce; it uses echolocation to locate food at night. Feeding occurs mainly in the evening and early morning, with individuals traveling several kilometers from their roosts to forage.

Behavior

This bat is nocturnal, emerging at dusk to forage in groups or alone; it roosts in colonies of up to several hundred individuals in caves or trees, exhibiting social grooming and vocal communications. They are highly territorial around roosting sites and agile fliers, capable of hovering to pluck fruit.
