Habitat
Water chevrotains primarily inhabit dense tropical rainforests and swamps in West and Central Africa, especially near rivers, streams, and flooded areas. They prefer lowland forests with thick undergrowth for cover and easy access to water. These areas provide both food sources and protection from predators.
Diet
Water chevrotains are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, shoots, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates like frogs or crustaceans. They forage mainly at night or during dawn and dusk, using their keen sense of smell to locate food in the underbrush. This feeding behavior helps them avoid competition with other herbivores.
Behavior
Water chevrotains are solitary animals that are primarily nocturnal, spending the day hidden in dense vegetation. They are territorial, marking their areas with scent glands and communicating through high-pitched calls. They exhibit strong swimming abilities, often escaping into water when threatened, and are generally shy and elusive in the wild.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the water chevrotain is Least Concern, but populations are declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting. Major threats include fragmentation of rainforest habitats and incidental capture in traps.
