Habitat
The Voi shrew inhabits savannas, grasslands, and moist forests in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania. It prefers areas with dense ground cover and proximity to water sources for foraging. These environments provide ample hiding spots from predators and access to prey.
Diet
The Voi shrew primarily eats insects such as beetles and ants, along with earthworms and other invertebrates. It forages actively at night, using its keen sense of smell to locate food in leaf litter and soil. This high-metabolism species must consume food frequently to maintain energy levels.
Behavior
Voi shrews are solitary and nocturnal, spending their nights foraging for food in a rapid, darting manner. They are highly territorial, marking areas with scent glands, and exhibit aggressive behaviors when defending their space. Despite their small size, they are vocal, producing high-pitched sounds for communication.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Voi shrew is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat loss from agriculture and urbanization, but it is not currently facing significant decline.
