Habitat

This species inhabits montane and lowland rainforests on the Vogelkop Peninsula in western New Guinea, Indonesia. They prefer dense, tropical forests with plenty of tree cover for arboreal living, typically at elevations from sea level up to 2,000 meters.

Diet

The Vogelkop ringtail possum primarily eats leaves, fruits, and flowers from rainforest trees, with a preference for eucalyptus and other native plants. They are nocturnal feeders, foraging alone in the canopy during the night, and may occasionally consume insects or sap.

Behavior

Vogelkop ringtail possums are nocturnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees and being highly agile climbers. They are solitary animals with established home ranges, showing territorial behavior through vocalizations and scent marking, but they do not form large social groups. During the day, they rest in tree hollows or dense foliage.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, but habitat loss due to logging and agriculture is a major threat in their limited range.
