Habitat
They primarily inhabit tropical rainforests in northern South America, including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. These monkeys prefer dense, lowland forests with tall trees and proximity to rivers, avoiding open or disturbed areas. They are often found in elevations up to 2,500 meters.
Diet
Their diet mainly consists of leaves, fruits, and flowers, with leaves making up the majority to provide necessary nutrients. They feed during the day, spending several hours foraging in the treetops, and select a variety of plant species to avoid toxins in foliage.
Behavior
Venezuelan red howlers live in social groups of 5-15 individuals, typically led by a dominant male, and exhibit strong territorial behavior. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and are known for their loud, echoing howls that can be heard up to 5 km away to communicate and defend territory.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Venezuelan red howler as Least Concern, with a stable population trend overall. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and hunting for bushmeat.
