Habitat

Variegated wolves primarily inhabit savannas, grasslands, and semi-desert regions in North and East Africa. They prefer areas with scattered vegetation for cover and proximity to water sources. These wolves avoid dense forests and urban areas.

Diet

They are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on small mammals like rodents and hares, birds, reptiles, insects, and fruits or carrion. Feeding behavior includes hunting alone or in pairs at dawn and dusk, and scavenging from kills of larger predators. They adapt their diet based on seasonal availability of prey.

Behavior

Variegated wolves are typically nocturnal or crepuscular, active during dawn and dusk to avoid competition. They live in pairs or small family groups with a hierarchical structure, marking territories with urine and defending them against intruders. They communicate through vocalizations like howls and barks, and exhibit cooperative hunting in family units.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the African golden wolf, including the sondanicus subspecies, is Least Concern, but populations are declining due to habitat loss, persecution by humans, and road accidents. Major threats include fragmentation of habitats in North and East Africa.
