Habitat
This species inhabits the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin in Brazil, particularly in the understory and canopy of primary forests. They prefer areas with dense vegetation near rivers and avoid disturbed or secondary growth habitats.
Diet
Vanzolini's bald-faced saki primarily eats fruits, seeds, and young leaves, with occasional insects for protein. They forage in the forest canopy during the day, using their strong jaws to crack hard seeds. Feeding peaks in the early morning and late afternoon when fruits are most abundant.
Behavior
These monkeys live in small family groups of 2-8 individuals, typically consisting of a mated pair and their offspring. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and exhibit territorial behavior by vocalizing to defend their home range. They are generally shy and move quickly through the canopy to avoid threats.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies Vanzolini's bald-faced saki as Vulnerable due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Population trends are declining, with major threats including logging and agriculture expansion in the Amazon.
