Habitat
This species inhabits montane forests in the Udzungwa Mountains of east-central Tanzania, preferring elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. They thrive in dense, tropical rainforest environments with plenty of canopy cover for movement and feeding.
Diet
The Uzungwa red colobus primarily eats leaves, fruits, seeds, and flowers, with a preference for young leaves and buds. They feed mainly in the upper canopy during the day, spending several hours foraging in groups to access food resources.
Behavior
These monkeys live in troops of 20-50 individuals, led by a dominant male, and are highly social with frequent grooming and vocal communications. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and exhibit territorial behavior by defending their home ranges through alarm calls.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Endangered, with the population declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting for bushmeat. Conservation efforts include protected areas in the Udzungwa Mountains to mitigate these threats.
