Habitat
Primarily found in forests, grasslands, and shrublands with dense undergrowth in East Asia, including Russia, China, and Korea. It prefers moist environments near streams or wetlands for cover and food sources. These areas provide ample vegetation for burrowing and hiding.
Diet
The Ussuri white-toothed shrew mainly consumes insects like beetles and ants, as well as earthworms and other small invertebrates. It forages actively by probing soil and leaf litter, often feeding multiple times a day due to its high metabolic rate. Feeding occurs both day and night to meet energy demands.
Behavior
Ussuri white-toothed shrews are solitary and territorial, marking their areas with scent and vocalizations. They are primarily nocturnal, spending the day in burrows or under logs, and exhibit high activity levels to hunt frequently. These shrews are aggressive when defending territory but avoid direct confrontations when possible.
Conservation Status
IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural expansion.
