Habitat
This species primarily inhabits arid and semi-arid savannas, grasslands, and rocky areas in East Africa. They prefer regions with loose soils for burrowing, such as in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia. These environments provide cover from predators and access to food sources.
Diet
Unstriped ground squirrels mainly consume seeds, nuts, roots, and green vegetation, supplemented by insects like ants and termites. They are active foragers during the day, often caching food in their burrows for later use. Feeding activity peaks in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
Behavior
They are diurnal and live in social colonies with complex burrow systems for shelter and protection. Unstriped ground squirrels exhibit territorial behavior, defending their burrows through vocalizations and chases. They are agile climbers and often stand on their hind legs to survey for threats.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from agriculture and overgrazing by livestock.
