Habitat

Unicorn filefish inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, often found in open pelagic zones or near coral reefs and floating debris. They prefer depths from 1 to 100 meters and are commonly associated with sargassum weed or other floating materials for shelter.

Diet

They primarily feed on algae, seagrasses, and small invertebrates such as crustaceans and mollusks. Feeding occurs mainly during the day, where they use their beak-like mouths to scrape food from surfaces or pick items from the water column.

Behavior

Unicorn filefish are typically solitary or found in loose pairs, exhibiting diurnal activity patterns with resting periods at night. They display territorial behavior around food sources and can inflate their bodies or change color to evade predators. These fish are known for their ability to mimic drifting seaweed for camouflage.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
