Habitat

This species inhabits montane forests and cloud forests in Bolivia, primarily at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. It prefers humid, dense vegetation areas with plenty of undergrowth for cover and foraging. These environments provide access to trees and shrubs essential for its arboreal lifestyle.

Diet

The Unduavi gracile opossum primarily eats insects such as beetles and ants, along with small invertebrates, fruits, and occasionally nectar. It forages nocturnally on the ground and in trees, using its keen senses to locate food. Feeding occurs mainly at night to avoid predators.

Behavior

This opossum is nocturnal and primarily arboreal, spending much of its time climbing trees and foraging alone. It exhibits solitary behavior, with individuals maintaining small territories and using dens in tree hollows or leaf litter for shelter. During the day, it remains hidden to avoid detection, and it may play dead when threatened, a common trait in opossums.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Unduavi gracile opossum is Data Deficient due to limited research, with population trends unknown. Major threats may include habitat loss from deforestation in its Bolivian range.
