Habitat
This species inhabits rocky reefs and coastal waters in the Western Central Pacific, including areas around Japan, the East China Sea, and the Southern Korean Peninsula, at depths of 10 to 200 meters. It prefers areas with abundant cover like crevices and boulders for hiding and ambush hunting.
Diet
Ukkarikasago primarily feeds on small fish, shrimp, and crustaceans, using its camouflaged position to ambush prey. It is most active during twilight hours or at night when it hunts in rocky environments.
Behavior
This fish is solitary and territorial, often remaining hidden among rocks during the day and becoming more active at night for feeding. It exhibits ambush predation, relying on camouflage to surprise prey, and is generally sedentary with limited migration.
