Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and montane forests in Borneo, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It prefers dense vegetation in lowland and upland areas up to 1,500 meters, where it can find ample tree cover and food sources.
Diet
The Tufted Pygmy Squirrel feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, and insects, often foraging in the canopy of trees. It exhibits opportunistic feeding behavior, consuming nectar and fungi when available, and is most active during the day when searching for food.
Behavior
Tufted Pygmy Squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they are agile climbers. They are generally solitary or found in pairs, with territorial behavior involving vocalizations and chases to defend their feeding areas. These squirrels are quick and alert, often freezing or darting away at the sign of danger.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Tufted Pygmy Squirrel as Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss due to deforestation poses a significant threat. Conservation efforts focus on protecting rainforest habitats in Borneo.
