Habitat

This species inhabits freshwater rivers, lakes, and floodplains across sub-Saharan Africa, preferring warm, slow-moving waters with plenty of vegetation. It is commonly found in the Volta Lake in Ghana and various river systems in West and Central Africa. These environments provide cover from predators and ample food sources.

Diet

The true big scale tetra primarily feeds on insects, small crustaceans, and occasionally smaller fish or plant matter. It is an opportunistic feeder, often hunting in schools during dawn and dusk when prey is most active. Feeding behavior includes surface strikes and mid-water pursuits.

Behavior

True big scale tetras are schooling fish that form groups for protection and foraging, making them highly social and active during the day. They exhibit territorial behavior around breeding sites and can migrate seasonally in response to water levels. These fish are agile swimmers, often darting quickly to evade threats or capture prey.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
