Habitat

This species inhabits riparian zones, streams, rivers, and wetlands in mountainous regions. It prefers fast-flowing, clear freshwater bodies with abundant vegetation for cover, primarily in the Caucasus Mountains and adjacent areas of Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, and Russia.

Diet

The Transcaucasian water shrew primarily eats aquatic insects, small crustaceans, worms, and occasionally small fish or amphibians. It hunts by foraging along stream edges and underwater, using its sensitive whiskers to detect prey, and feeds frequently due to its high metabolic rate, often at night.

Behavior

These shrews are solitary and territorial, marking their areas with scent and aggressively defending them from intruders. They are primarily nocturnal, spending much of their time swimming and hunting in water, and exhibit rapid, darting movements. They communicate through high-pitched sounds for navigation and possibly echolocation.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from water pollution and agricultural development.
