Habitat

The Tien Shan shrew inhabits mountainous regions of Central Asia, particularly the Tien Shan range in countries like Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. It prefers moist, cool environments such as alpine meadows, forests, and areas near streams at elevations up to 3,000 meters. These shrews are often found in rocky terrains or under vegetation cover.

Diet

The Tien Shan shrew primarily feeds on insects, earthworms, and other small invertebrates. It forages actively using its keen sense of smell, often hunting day and night due to its high metabolic rate. This species consumes food equivalent to its body weight daily to maintain energy levels.

Behavior

Tien Shan shrews are solitary and territorial, defending small areas with scent markings. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to forage with rapid, darting movements. These shrews communicate through high-pitched vocalizations and exhibit aggressive behavior when encountering rivals.

Conservation Status

The IUCN Red List classifies the Tien Shan shrew as Least Concern, with a stable population trend and no major threats currently identified. However, potential habitat loss from climate change in alpine regions could pose future risks.
