Habitat

Thornback guitarfish inhabit shallow coastal waters, sandy or muddy bottoms, and estuaries along the eastern Pacific from California to Baja California. They prefer depths of 1 to 20 meters and are often found near kelp beds or rocky areas for shelter. This species avoids open ocean, sticking to nearshore environments.

Diet

Thornback guitarfish primarily feed on benthic invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, and worms, which they locate by rooting through sand or mud. They are nocturnal hunters, actively foraging at night and using their pectoral fins to uncover prey. Occasionally, they consume small fish if available.

Behavior

Thornback guitarfish are primarily solitary or found in small groups, spending much of their time buried in sand to ambush prey or avoid detection. They are nocturnal, becoming more active at night for feeding, and exhibit territorial behavior when defending feeding areas. During the day, they rest on the bottom, relying on camouflage for protection.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
