Habitat

This species inhabits coastal marine and estuarine environments in the Indo-West Pacific, including the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and waters around Thailand. It prefers shallow, turbid waters with muddy or sandy substrates, often found near river mouths or mangroves where salinity varies. These areas provide ample cover and food sources.

Diet

The thickspined catfish primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and benthic invertebrates like worms and mollusks. It is a nocturnal hunter, using its barbels to probe the substrate for prey in low-light conditions. Feeding activity peaks at night or during twilight hours when it ambushes prey in murky waters.

Behavior

This catfish is generally solitary or found in small groups, exhibiting nocturnal activity patterns to avoid daytime predators. It is territorial around feeding grounds, using its spines for defense when threatened. During the day, it often buries itself in sediment to rest and conserve energy.
