Habitat

This species primarily inhabits alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and grasslands in the Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey, at elevations up to 2,000 meters. It prefers areas with loose soil for burrowing and proximity to vegetation for cover.

Diet

The Taurus ground squirrel feeds mainly on seeds, nuts, roots, and green vegetation, supplemented by insects during warmer months. It forages during the day, often storing food in burrows for later use.

Behavior

Taurus ground squirrels are diurnal and live in loose colonies with established burrow systems, exhibiting territorial behavior around their dens. They are agile climbers and diggers, often standing on hind legs to survey for threats, and they hibernate during the winter months.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Taurus ground squirrel as Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from agriculture poses a potential threat.
