Habitat
The Sunda leopard cat inhabits tropical rainforests, secondary forests, and grasslands, primarily on the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It adapts well to human-modified environments like agricultural areas and plantations. They prefer areas with dense vegetation near water sources for cover and hunting.
Diet
The Sunda leopard cat primarily eats small rodents, birds, and reptiles such as lizards and frogs. It also consumes insects, amphibians, and occasionally fish. They are nocturnal hunters that use stealth and ambush tactics to catch prey.
Behavior
Sunda leopard cats are solitary and territorial animals, marking their ranges with urine and scratches to avoid encounters with others. They are primarily nocturnal, spending nights hunting and days resting in trees or dense cover. These cats are agile climbers and swimmers, often using elevated perches to survey their surroundings.
Conservation Status
The Sunda leopard cat is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but its population is decreasing due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include roadkill, the pet trade, and human-wildlife conflict.
