Habitat

This bat primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and lowland forests in Sulawesi, Indonesia, often roosting in trees and caves. It prefers areas with abundant fruit trees and avoids highly disturbed or urban environments. Geographic range is limited to the Sulawesi archipelago.

Diet

The Sulawesi harpy fruit bat feeds mainly on fruits such as figs, mangoes, and other soft tropical fruits, which it locates using echolocation. It is nocturnal, foraging at night in groups, and plays a key role in seed dispersal for forest regeneration. Feeding behavior includes hovering or landing on fruit to consume it.

Behavior

This bat is highly social, forming colonies in tree hollows or caves during the day and emerging at night to forage. It exhibits territorial behavior around feeding sites and uses echolocation for navigation and hunting. Notable behaviors include grooming to maintain fur and wings, and it is generally non-aggressive towards humans.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and mining. Population trends are declining, with major threats including human encroachment and climate change.
