Habitat
This bird primarily inhabits freshwater wetlands, marshes, and lakes in the Subandean regions of South America, often at elevations up to 2,500 meters. It prefers areas with dense emergent vegetation for cover and nesting. These habitats are typically near slow-moving or still waters.
Diet
It feeds on aquatic plants, seeds, insects, and small invertebrates like snails. Feeding behavior involves dabbling in shallow water or foraging along edges of vegetation, usually during the day. They occasionally consume small fish or amphibians when available.
Behavior
Subandean common gallinules are secretive and often hide in dense reeds, emerging to forage in small groups. They are diurnal, with activity peaking in the early morning and late afternoon, and exhibit territorial calls during breeding season. These birds are strong swimmers and can run across floating vegetation to escape threats.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists the Common Gallinule as Least Concern, with the subspecies likely stable due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat loss from wetland drainage and pollution.
