Habitat

Styan's red panda inhabits temperate forests in the eastern Himalayas, including regions of China and Myanmar, at elevations between 1,500 and 4,800 meters. They prefer areas with dense bamboo undergrowth and coniferous trees for cover and food. These habitats are typically cool and moist, with rocky terrain that provides shelter.

Diet

Styan's red panda mainly eats bamboo leaves, shoots, and stems, which make up about 95% of their diet. They supplement with fruits, acorns, roots, and occasionally insects or bird eggs, feeding primarily at dawn and dusk. Their feeding behavior involves sitting upright to hold food with their paws, adapting to an arboreal lifestyle.

Behavior

Styan's red panda is primarily solitary, except during mating season, and is most active during dawn and dusk in a crepuscular pattern. They are excellent climbers, spending much of their time in trees to avoid ground predators and mark territories with scent from anal glands. Territorial behavior includes vocalizations and scent marking, with individuals defending home ranges of about 1-2 square kilometers.

Conservation Status

Styan's red panda is classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include climate change, poaching, and human encroachment, with populations continuing to decline.
