Habitat
This eel inhabits shallow coastal waters and continental shelves in the Atlantic Ocean, preferring sandy or muddy bottoms where it can burrow for protection. It is commonly found at depths of 1 to 50 meters, often near coral reefs, seagrass beds, or estuarine environments in the Western Central and Southwest Atlantic regions.
Diet
The stippled spoon-nose eel primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and polychaete worms that it ambushes from its burrows. It is nocturnal, emerging at night to hunt in the sediment or near the seafloor, using its sensitive snout to detect prey.
Behavior
This eel is primarily nocturnal and solitary, spending most of the day buried in sand or mud to avoid predators. It exhibits territorial behavior around its burrow but migrates short distances for feeding or reproduction. When threatened, it quickly retreats into the substrate rather than swimming away.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
