Habitat
Steppe pikas primarily inhabit open grasslands, semi-deserts, and rocky steppes in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, such as in Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan. They prefer areas with sparse vegetation and burrows for shelter, avoiding dense forests or wet environments.
Diet
Steppe pikas feed mainly on grasses, herbs, and leaves, with a preference for fresh green vegetation. They are active grazers during the day, often collecting and storing food in hay piles for winter consumption.
Behavior
Steppe pikas are diurnal and live in loose colonies with shared burrow systems, exhibiting territorial behavior around their dens. They are agile runners and produce high-pitched alarm calls to warn of predators. These animals are known for their haymaking behavior, gathering vegetation to dry and store for winter.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Steppe pika is Least Concern, though populations are declining due to habitat loss from agriculture and overgrazing. Major threats include fragmentation of steppe habitats and climate change impacts.
